晶能光电有限公司于2006年2月1日在开曼群岛注册成立，引进金沙江创投、Mayfield Fund、AsiaVest、淡马锡控股、Keytone等创业投资机构5200万美元。晶能光电（江西）有限公司以南昌大学发光材料与器件教育部工程研究中心为技术依托，由晶能光电有限公司投资创立，注册资金5000万美元。公司从事硅衬底氮化镓基LED外延材料与芯片生产，在氮化镓基半导体发光材料领域创造性地发展出第三条技术路线。该技术是一种改写氮化镓基LED历史的新技术，具有原创技术产权，已获得或者公开国际国内发明专利50多项。
